23.04.2023No, Knock is NOT Rocket League. Ultimechs is NOT Rocket League. ANYTHING in which you shoot something at the ball, from where you are is NOT Rocket League. Nothing in VR, or anywhere else, is Rocket League, and so please stop trying to make games that feel almost nothing like Rocket League out to be Rocket League.
The 7.5 years of polish, on top of SARPBC (which ain’t even Rocket League, either, despite being its direct predecessor, several years earlier, made by the same devs for the PS3 (RL was first exclusive to PS4, in July, 2015 — the best “free Plus (or any other “free game service game,” ever))_ is Rocket League.
Physical copies of Rocket League Ultimate Edition, for PS4, go for $117 (new), and for Switch (no new copies available) goes for $119, in VGood—not even “Excellent”—condition. The day Epic announced Rocket League was going free-to-play, I picked up physical copies for PS4, as well as Switch (which I don’t even own), for $22 apiece, and five months later, they were $188, ‘cause people WILL want to play Rocket League, long after their drives and/or SD cards wear out and the game is no longer online. That will never be the case, for any of the “Rocket-League-like” games on the market, right now (2/17/23) — and it wouldn’t, even if there were physical copies.
Rocket League is in a class, by itself, and for gameplay, it’s perfection. I don’t think any soccer playing (X) game will ever be as good as Rocket League, just like no game will ever be a Smash Bros, no game will ever be a Tecmo Bowl, and no game will ever be a Mario Kart (despite every IP on the planet putting out a “kart racer”; although blur is as good as it gets, ‘cause it’s not a “kart” game but one that blends “kart weapon play” with realistic graphics and driving (to be the PUBG to Fortnite, except in reverse chronological order… )).
ONLY a Rocket League follow-up—or perhaps one that has ALL the same moves and fluidity, using real cars, otherwise done exactly like Rocket League, the original—will ever be _Rocket League, so long as the IP is owned and protected by Epic. Why Sony didn’t buy Psyonix—at least by Christmas, 2016–when they had the chance, is a complete mystery.
So, stop trying to make other games out to be ANY kind of equivalent to Rocket League, please—especially those that have completely different mechanics, particularly those that are more like “billiard soccer”—‘cause they’re just not.
Other games might be like (vanilla) Tetris ( ”Tetris” will always be the “biggest selling game of all time,” as Scott the Woz points out, because the “authorities on the subject” count EVERY Tetris version ever made (up to and including Tetris Effect, as though all Mario Kart or Madden versions are the same game)), as just Tetris.
